Arkansas
June 2012
From Driskill Mountain, Louisiana to Mount Magazine in Arkansas. We pass this sign, reminding us that, yes, we are in the Bible Belt…
JESUS FIRST
OTHERS SECOND
YOU LAST
We get lost on our drive, not spiritually, but geographically. For thirty minutes Lisa drives this way and that on the two-lanes with me cursing the maps. We finally figure out our route just north of Waldo, Arkansas. Lisa says, “This is genuinely Where is Waldo.”
We drive through the 321-acre town of Delight, Arkansas. Takes a minute and a half. Country musician Glen Campbell, the seventh son of a seventh son, was born here in Delight, Arkansas. Well, actually, he was born in a suburb called Billstown. Think about that. Delight, a town of just 278 people, has a suburb. That’s fewer people than went to my high school.
But while I have you here, in the heart of the Bible Belt, I am compelled to tell you that Mr Campbell, at various times of his life, was a member of the Church of Christ, a Baptist church in Phoenix and for 20 years, identified as a Messianic Jew. What a delight!
