Frick Park
Pittsburgh
August 2023
The Frick Park Lawn Bowling Club rocks it in Pittsburgh’s East End. Has since 1938. Generally older folk roll a ball on the manicured grass about as slowly as it can move without imitating stasis. I think those playing this bowling-like game get older as they play. Their goal however, is to have your ball stop near to another particular ball.
Let’s set the record straight, because these balls don’t.
First, they are not balls. They are called “bowls” and according to the website, are “round only in one direction and elliptical in the other, causing it to curve as it slows down.” Honestly, I don’t have a clue what that means. Which is fine because this is not what I want to say here.
My current message is simple. As I walked by an open practice on the green earlier today, a woman and I were having the same experience encountering irritating insects, which is to say, none. The difference between her and me is that she was spraying bug repellant all over herself, anywhere she had exposed skin, and I was spraying nothing.
Reminds me of my mom when I was a teen. Whenever we’d drive somewhere, she would complain about how hot it was in the car while we were still leaving the house.
I once heard a corporate manager explain his hiring practice. He would take a perspective job candidate to lunch. If the person salted their food before tasting it, they would not get hired.
Now that we have all these rules and guidelines laid out for us, let’s roll!
