Frick Park
Pittsburgh
June 2015
I can’t tell you how many times I have walked in Frick Park here in my neighborhood, but it’s a lot. Four figures worth. Do something a thousand times and you forget some of the details. But some do stand out.
I remember…
There is a particular wide expanse of mowed grass, popular for dog owners to let their pets run free. You’ve never seen such a giddy group of quadruped creatures leaping and growling and joyfully slobbering on each other, or at least not since my bar mitzvah.
One day as I walked past Dog Meadow and watched canines jumping upon one another, dodging and lunging, I noticed one dog having trouble keeping up with the others. It had only three legs; it did its best.
Immediately after noticing this tripod, I spotted an acquaintance of mine standing in the field. She was talking with a man I didn’t know. This man was standing on his only leg.
Hmm… Three-legged dog. One legged man.
I ran into my friend a few weeks later in the same place. I couldn’t resist asking her if the man and the dog were together.
C’mon, you were thinking this too.
