Kerhonkson
New York
May 2019
Philosopher, cognitive scientist, political activist, social critic, “father of modern linguistics,” professor, author, National Science Fellow, scholar and a guy who made it onto Richard Nixon’s Enemies list.
This is none other than Noam Chomsky.
Although he still has an office at MIT (Professor Chomsky is 90 years old at the time of this writing) and Lisa and I are sort of in this vicinity, this is not who we visit. Our journey takes us to the hamlet of Kerhonkson, New York, where we spend time with Noam Chomsky’s namesake, Gnome Chomsky.
Gnome Chomsky presides over the 100-acre, 200-year-old Kelder’s Farm where you can find farm-like things such as fruits and vegetables and even a petting zoo. Un-farm-like offerings include mini-golf, a cannon that fires apples over 100 miles per hour, hayrides, a corn maze and more!
“More” includes a jumping pillow.
To be clear, Gnome Chomsky was never a philosopher, cognitive scientist, author, etc, and never fathered anything or anyone, especially modern linguistics. But Gnome… He is the one we seek. It is much easier to get an appointment.
